Wine Creek Straw Bale House

Healdsburg, California

Design by Siegel & Strain Architects, Berkeley, California

The Siegel's energy efficient straw bale home was completed in 2002. This award winning house was designed and built utilizing green building guidelines.

Stained, radiant heated floors were poured from fly ash concrete. The amount of lumber, which was FSC Certifed, was reduced by the use of infill straw bales. The metal roof is insulated with dry-blown cellulose. Doors and windows were custom made from certified mahogany. Kitchen countertops were fabricated from pre-cast concrete. The house is passively cooled through the hot summer season without the use of air-conditioning.
